I see no particular objection to this principle of division, although of course the amount of paid-up Capital is not the only test of a Bank's stability, but it would have been more logical to apply the principle to the total amounts of money entrusted to the Banks by the public, including at the present time the further sum of $50,000 on deposit in the New Oriental Bank, and the general current account in the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank.
3. I think, however, that it will be a simpler rule to fix the same limit for each Bank in which deposits are made, treating all Banks on an equality, unless some special reason hereafter arise for making a distinction, and addressing a separate despatch as to the amount, and also as to the limit for their Current Account.
